Android is the name of the operating system used on many smartphones and tablets. It is owned and maintained by Google.

This operating system is an Open Source OS, this means, Google will let other companies use the basic version of Android and then change its look to suit how that company wants it to look on its phones. That’s why not all Android phones look the same when you turn them on.

Every year Google comes up with a newer version of Android, and some phones can get the update on the operating system. However, many other phones are not suitable for the updates, and they remain on a previous version. This is why it is important to know which Android version your Android phone is running on.

Android Versions:

Android versions have a number and a code name, which is usually some common sweet or dessert. These nicknames go on alphabetical order, and it is also common to find the next version being called by the initial letter of the their code name, E.g. Android N for Nougat, Android O for Oreo and Android P for Pie.

Find in the next page a table with the list of Android versions and their code names since 2008.
