Seeing AI is a free app that narrates the world around you.

Designed with and for the blind and low vision community, this ongoing research project harnesses the power of AI to open up the visual world.

Seeing AI assists with daily tasks from reading, to describing photos, to identifying products, and more.

The app continues to evolve as we hear from the community and AI research advances.

How do you use the Seeing AI App?

Seeing AI is a free app that narrates the world around you. Designed with and for the blind and low vision community, this ongoing research project harnesses the power of AI to open up the visual world by describing nearby people, text and objects.

Seeing AI provides tools to assist with a variety of daily tasks:

  • Short Text - Speaks text as soon as it appears in front of the camera.
  • Documents - Provides audio guidance to capture a printed page, and recognizes the text, along with its original formatting. Ask questions about the contents to easily find the information you need.
  • Products - Scans barcodes, or Accessible QR codes, using audio beeps to guide you; hear the name, and package information when available.
  • Scenes - Hear an overall description of the scene captured. Tap "More Info" to hear an even richer description. Or, explore the photo by moving your finger over the screen to hear the location of different objects.
  • People - Saves people’s faces so you can recognize them, and get an estimate of their age, gender, and expression.
  • Currency - Recognizes currency notes.
  • Colors - Identifies colors.
  • Handwriting - Reads handwritten text like in greeting cards (available in a subset of languages).Light - Generates an audible tone corresponding to the brightness in the surroundings.
  • Images in other apps - Just tap “Share” and “Recognize with Seeing AI” to describe images from Mail, Photos, Twitter, and more.
  • Seeing AI continues to evolve as we hear from the community, and AI research advances.

These applications allow you to zoom in on your smart device screen. This can be used to read small text or see details in an image, useful for people with low vision.  These apps are designed to work across other apps on your device; however the compatibility will depend on the restrictions of each app and operating system of your device.

1.  Zoom on iOS

Apple iOS has a built-in zoom function that allows you to magnify the screen across apps, working together with VoiceOver to improve access to all functions of your device. You can magnify the entire screen (Full Screen Zoom) or magnify only part of the screen with a resizable lens (Window Zoom).

Set up Zoom:

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom, and then turn on Zoom. From here you can use any of the following features:

  • Set the maximum magnification by dragging the Maximum Zoom Level slider.
  • Apply a filter to the magnified part of the screen: Tap Zoom Filter, then choose Inverted, Grayscale, Grayscale Inverted, or Low Light.
  • Choose between Full Screen Zoom and Window Zoom.
  • Turn on Show Controller: To control the zoom function
  • Turn on Smart Typing: To magnify typing in apps but not the keyboard
  • Turn on Follow Focus: This allows the zoom window to track and magnify your selections, the text insertion point, and your typing
  • To add Zoom to Accessibility Shortcut, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut, then tap Zoom.

2.  Magnification on Android

Certain Android Operating Systems include a built-in zoom function that allows you to magnify your device screen. This can be controlled using Magnify with triple-tap or Magnify with Accessibility button.

Turn on Magnification

  • Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  • Open Accessibility, then Magnification.
  • Choose either Magnify with triple-tap or Magnify with button.
  • If you don't see these options, you might be using an earlier version of Android. Turn on Magnification, then follow the steps below for magnify with triple-tap.

These can either be watched in real time or watched and responded to when convenient for you, allowing for continued conversations. Videos are saved to be re-watched, have unlimited length, can be sent to groups, and are free.

Marco Polo is popular among Auslan users and only requires a smart device and phone number to be used.

7.  FaceTime

FaceTime is a built-in app available on iPhone, iPod, and iPad devices in Australia. Video and voice calls are made using a person’s phone number or registered email address, and use your mobile internet or Wi-Fi to connect. It also allows for group calls to several FaceTime users.

FaceTime requires an Apple device and phone number or email address to be used.

Compatibility: Can be used with Wi-Fi on the iPhone 4 or later, iPad Pro, iPad 2 or later, iPad mini, and iPod touch 4th gen or later. Or with a cellular data plan and no Wi-Fi on the iPhone 4s or later, iPad Pro, and iPad.

In a single video conference call, this app can support around 100 concurrent participants, with additional features offered to users who purchase Pro and Business versions.

The free version of Zoom requires only an email address and smart device to be used.

  • Ability to share photos, Google Drive, Dropbox or Box files, and web links
  • Group text messages, images and audio both from desktop and mobile
  • Shows contact availability

Skype is a free application that allows you to make video and voice calls, send instant messages, and share photos and videos from your mobile device, tablet, or desktop computer. It includes free Skype-to-Skype calls using your data plan or Wi-Fi Connection, as well as providing the option to contact non-skype users through purchasing Skype Credit or Skype subscription.

This is a Siri application that allows you to create personal shortcuts that you can easily access by tapping or by asking Siri. This includes over 300 built-in actions and works across all iOS apps and many third party apps that support Siri Shortcuts.

Shortcuts can be launched from the Today widget, from Search, or by asking Siri. Additionally, you can add a shortcut icon from the app to your Home screen so that you can access that Shortcut without opening the app.

Examples of recommended Shortcuts include: get directions home, adding a Home screen icon that calls a loved one, send a text or call a number.

IFTTT allows users to set actions or tasks that control your apps, devices, and automated home products through a single button or switch. You can design your own actions and button names, or you can use tasks that have been programmed by someone else. For example, tasks or actions that can be completed include:

    • Notify me with the weather at 7:00 am
    • Order me an rideshare
    • When I arrive at home, send a message to my contact

 

It is important to note that it can be difficult to program your own set of actions, and that this app is designed for use in the United States therefore you cannot call or message someone using an Australian provider, but you can contact others using online platforms like WhatsApp or  Skype.

These apps offer additional features to the built-in screen reader functions available on your mobile device. Some of these apps will also read out the full message and allow you to dictate a response.

1.     Built-in Voice Notifications for Apple Devices

Apple iOS has a built-in feature that will speak your notifications as they come in. For iOS versions before iOS 13 this can be enabled through the VoiceOver feature. You can also adjust the style, speed, and volume of the VoiceOver as well as enable many other accessibility features.

To enable: Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Turn on VoiceOver and Turn on Always Speak Notifications

For iOS 13 users, there is the additional feature of having Siri, the Apple personal assistant, to automatically read your messages aloud as they come in. This feature also allows you to transcribe and reply a message without having to directly touch the device.

To enable: Go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Messages with Siri > and Turn on Announce Messages with Siri. This feature requires you to be using second generation AirPods

2.     Built-in voice Notifications for Android phones

For Android phones you can activate the Talkback option after downloading the Accessibility Suite from the play store. Talkback will read out loud notifications as they arrive along with everything on your screen (not just notifications). However, this changes the way you interact with your phone, which might be a drawback if you are looking for app to only read out loud notifications.

Another alternative is to ask your Google Assistant to read new notifications to you.

3.      Voice Notifications Apps for Android Phones:

For Android users, there are many options for apps that will read out your notifications for you. Below is a selection of six as an example.

a.   Shouter - Notification Reader

You can select which apps you would like the receive the notifications for, whether you would like to hear the name or contents, allocate ‘silent hours’ with no notifications, and read text messages out loud.
